My Favorites

When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy. - Rumi

Here are ten of my favorite things in life, the things that bring me more happy, happy, joy, joy.

1. Books. Since childhood, reading has been my favorite way to spend free time. I love browsing in bookstores, sitting in libraries, and organizing my books. I love the weight of a book in my hands, the way new books smell when you first crack them open, the way my colorful bookshelves cozy up a room. I never go anywhere without a book and usually prefer to have two, in case I finish one. I love contemporary fiction, classics, poetry, memoir, books about fashion, interior design. My to-read pile is exceedingly high and it frequently tips over.

2. Cooking. When I first got married I didn't really know much about cooking and did very basic things. We ate a lot of tortellini and a lot of baked chicken. When my husband, daughter and I lived overseas, I became interested in classical cooking. I bought a few cookbooks, took some classes and tried many different recipes. I discovered the utter joy of spending time in the kitchen and serving (and of course eating) a delicious meal.

3. Poetry. I've been drawn to poetry since I was very young. I adore the words, the words, the beautiful words. Isn't it gorgeous the way the words in poems seem to dance right off the page? I love that a poet can express so much with spare language. Poetry is both energizing and soothing to me; it is the perfect way to move into the present moment and stay there.

4. Writing. My poems, my notebooks and journal, correspondence, lists, Twitter, the blog, scratch pads, stories. All of it.

5. Everything French. I love Paris, the countryside, the language, the films, the music.

6. Classics. Diamond stud earrings, a string of Mikimoto pearls, gold and silver hoops both small and large. The jangling silver charm bracelet I started as a teenager - complete with telephone, cheerleader and horse charms. A timeless Cartier tank watch. Trouser suits, cashmere sweaters, black slingback heels. Kate Spade. Diane von Furstenberg wrap dresses. Basics from J. Crew.

7. Scarves. I started wearing scarves in high school. I love different patterns and colors and fabrics. The way they add a bit of zip to an outfit. Like any proper NYC girl, I wear a lot of black. Scarves are perfect for adding color and texture to a monochromatic look. I have gorgeous Hermes scarves I bought in Paris and long to wear them effortlessly, the way French women do, as I stroll the Boulevard San-Germain.

8. Blue and White. I love the boldness of these colors together, especially for home decorating. When I lived in Japan, I became drawn to blue and white patterns that are prevalent there in indigo textiles and contemporary ceramics. With a set of plain white dinnerware, accent plates and platters in blue and white are the perfect thing. Blue and white at home are perfectly classic, comfortable and casually elegant.

9. Stationery. I have a cabinet filled with paper, note cards, colored pencils, file cards. Don't get me started on Moleskine notebooks - I have many sizes and versions at the ready when inspiration strikes. And I love to write letters to friends and send postcards to my nieces and nephews. I want to do my part to make sure these technology savvy kids know what snail mail is.

10. Woody Allen films. Annie Hall. Manhattan. Crimes and Misdemeanors. Zelig. Alice. Husbands and Wives. They are perfect for a NYC girl like me.

What are your top ten favorite things? Or just a few of your favorite things. I'd love to know.

  1. What a lovely list, Kathleen.

I would add, not just books, but bookstores and libraries. Two of my favorite places. Oh, and coffee shops. Give me a bookstore with a coffee shop and I am in heaven.

Outdoor cafes in the spring or fall.

    Fresh flowers.

    San Francisco.

    Orange and red.

    The ocean.

I feel a little slice of happy just typing these. Thank you for that.

  2. I love your description of coming to cooking. I hope that happens to me. I'm really trying to like it!

And I like that you include everything in writing, even twitter. I feel that way too. In school, I was never sad about having to write essays and term papers. Like you, I love it all.

    My list...

    Writing
    Books
    Post cards
    Trails
Water (to float on, to swim through, to watch)
Outside cafes (but I like them in summer too)
    Summer ;-)
    Dogs (especially Lexi)
A glass of wine with someone I love

Tammy's right. I feel a little slice of happy too. Thank you!

  3. @Tammy:I like everything on your list. A bookstore with a coffee spot is perfect. I enjoy outdoor cafes, too. I try to keep fresh flowers around because they always cheer me. Such a simple, beautiful thing. Peonies and tulips and hydrangea are my favorites.

@J Glad you feel a slice of happy. Yes, water! And dogs. I love pugs and wish I could have one (my building in NYC doesn't allow dogs. Scrooges!) I love playing with my sister's puppy. You know I enjoy a glass of wine. Maybe two.

  4. I love this list, especially the Classics (I adore all of those things), the Scarves, and the Stationery. My experience of cooking was much the same as yours- I was not great as a newlywed but took classes a few years into my marriage and then started a cookbook club and now take great comfort and pride even in my amateur chef skills. I also love books and spend too much (what is too much?) money and time on them. I wish I could spend my life writing- to people, about people, with people. Like j I would add dogs to my list, but especially my Nickel and my Penny, who know me so well. And music. Plus the beach. I crave trips to the beach, to look at the horizon and walk along the water. J'adore lists, too. :)

  5. Oh! Lists! I love lists!!!

    Let's give this a try:

    1) Blogs
    2) Writing
    3) Working with children with Autism (I sometimes forget that's what I really do -- that's what my life's work is, that's where my heart is)
    4) Popcorn from the movies -- I would often go in just to buy my mom a big bag and bring it home to her.
    5) Canoe trips -- nothing better than navigating a river or lake from a canoe... quiet, tranquil, peaceful (I actually just did this with some friends so it's fresh in my lovefest memory)
    6) Listening to my kids tell me stories from their days -- amazing, heartfelt, funny, sad, scary.
    7) Sitting outside on a warm day and enjoying a cold beer (I know I know, you prefer wine -- I'm working on that) from the porch of the local brew pub with a crowd of best buds -- just did this too, after the canoe trip.
    8) My dogs -- and all their dumb antics.
    9) Making Cards -- (check your mail soonish!)
    10) Here... coming here is one of my favorite things.
    xoxo

  6. Fantastic list! I love knowing the things my friends love. :o) I think I could take a couple from you, Tammy and Judy and be just about right. But let me think of something not on this list:
I love the feel of the sun on my SPF 50'd face.
I could sit outside in the middle of nowhere and stare at the stars until they faded in the sunrise.
I love quiet and alone, and laughter and people, almost equally.
Then of course there is orange my favorite color. Followed by purple
    Office supplies - good ones.
Nice paper, colorful, patterned, handmade - all of it.
Hmm, I think I could go on forever, and since I should leave room for all of the other folks, I will stop.

I love the way you wrote about poetry. It is clear by reading that one, that you are in love with words and how they fit together and it makes me want write something too! What a great passion to have.

Thank you Kathleen, I'm smiling ear to ear. I love thinking about things that make me happy. I do love a lot of things, which is surprising - a curmudgeon like me. :o) xo

  10. @Allison I knew I liked you! Our lists are very similar. By the way, there's no such thing as spending too much money on books. I checked the official rule book.

@Becky I love lists, too. My dad always makes lists on yellow legal pads and I do as well. Let's sit side by side on the front stoop, you with your beer, me with my wine.

@Caroline Interesting how many of us like stationery so much. I'd like to see your paper collection. Yes, the balance of quiet and alone, people and laughter. So true. I've discovered I need more time alone as I get older. Time for creative pursuits.

@Laura We are SO related, it's true. I LOVE that you came back to correct a spelling error. That is exactly what I would do - so many people would just let it go. Spelling is a thing with me. Dreams about your brother, that makes me teary. And I love 81st Street and the man who lives on it. As for the scarf, yes please!

  15. Your list is awesome! If I could add a few things to the list, I'd add:
    - homemade dessert/cookies/cake/zuchini bread
    - old people who smile at you and wave and say "Good evening, ma'am"
    - puffy stickers, the kind that are fun to feel

Did you ever read the Book of Awesome? I Think you'd like it, because it's about all the little things that people overlook

Maybe check out my website? I love writing about the little things in life too haha :)

  16. I have something totally random to ask by the way. Though I'm 17, I'm already curious...is it hard being a mom? I'd never really ask my mom because she'd probably launch into a list of all the reasons it's tough being my mom :)

You know what I think is probably the hardest part of being a parent? Trying to remember all teh way back to what it feels like to be a kid or teen. I mean, sometimes my little sister comes to me for help, and I can't imagine why her problems are difficult. But before I get impatient, I remember when my parents don't understand why *I* struggle with MY problems. So then I'm nicer to my lil sis about hers.

  18. @Rachel Butter! That is brilliant. I have a feeling it would be on Julia Child's list as well. Yes, clicking with someone is wonderful. My husband met a friend at hockey a few years ago and when I met his wife - click! We became close friends effortlessly. What a joy.

@Vivian Hello and thanks for reading and commenting! You are so right about zucchini bread. I use my husband's grandmother's recipe and it is delicious. Now I want some with my coffee... To your question about being a mom, I feel inspired to write a blog post as a response. So check back in a few days; it will be my next post. In the meantime, here is a piece I wrote about being a mom when my daughter was graduating from college: http://alongerletterlater.blogspot.com/2010/05/on-eve-of-my-darling-daughters.html
I will go now to check out your blog!

@Dani So much of your list is about relationships and connection, truly the best things in life. Yes! I adore baking, too. I made some yummy brownies with walnuts yesterday and am now craving zucchini bread because Vivian mentioned it. Movies from the 30s and 40s, hmm? Would you recommend one or two favorites?
